PUFFINS!!!!!! WE SAW PUFFINS!!!
We left Boothbay Harbor this am in crystal clear weather. It was a FABULOUS am because I had grilled organic salmon with a hint of blue cheese (my favorite - but it has to be expensive; I don't like the cheap stuff) mixed in with my kibble - which I was able to maneuver around. I will have to do the kibble later today - but this am was heaven!! Boy do I love leftovers!
We wandered past a million lighthouses - you will see a few and headed out into Musconogus Bay and out to Eastern Egg Rock - home of the PUFFINS!!! The science folk figured out they could re-establish a colony here after human folk managed to kill them all off in Maine earlier in the 20th century. Now there are a bunch of puffin families living it large on this rock - and the humans are still working hard to keep the terns and the gulls and rodents off the island. I thought maybe they would ask me to come ashore and help - but no such luck. We bobbed around like corks while my personal assistants made fools of themselves - taking a picture of anything that moved. At last a few went swimming and we were close enough to see them and get a few pictures. I have to confess that I really do have trouble working the binoculars.
After that, we weaved our way around islands and lobster pots, passing isolated houses, summer colonies and lots of lighthouses. You could even see the mountains in the distance too! And the water was as calm as could be! No seasick doggies today!
We got to Rockland about noon and then headed out for the usual reconnaissance of the town. Looks like Rockland is now home to the artsy crowd: lots of galleries and such. Hope they have some good restaurants that overfill plates.
Again it is quite a ways to my personal hygiene facilities. But at least there is grass and I won't get run over getting to it - as I did in Boothbay. This pm back at the marina, it was time for laundry and games. I got to nap! Mucho better.
Tomorrow on to Castine. Bye for now.

Hey, Wat-buddy!
ReplyDeleteToo bad I wasn't with you - I'd have retrieved one of those puffins with no problem! Would have provided a good excuse to go swimming...
All under control here: no coyote sightings in the woods, but the bunnies need to learn some respect. They hop away when I tell them to, but come right back. Sigh... what's a dog to do?
Keep your crew in line, anyway.
Tail waggin',
