Howdy again, folks and canine pals. Here we are in Northeast Harbor. It is morning. They just put kibble in my bowl - and I turned my nose up at it. Last night What's Her Name brought me a shrimp for my evening snack. It rubbed off on the kibble too - so I wolfed that down too. So this am I can choose to be a little more picky. Tonight will be a different story. Hope something else shows up in my dish by then!
We tied up at the Northeast Harbor town marina and billeted ourselves for a 2 night stay. The "Yachtsman Building" leaves a bit to be desired. Built originally in about 35BC, they did add bathrooms and showers in about the late 1800's - with hot water coming in sometime around the time Howdy Doody was on TV. But good news is that no part of this body had to touch any surface!
It is a very pretty cove - at least we think so - as much as we can see with the fog wafting in and out. Yesterday when we arrived, there was some visibility so we did get to see the lay of the land. We lunched and then headed off for Bar Harbor on the Island Explorer shuttle bus, which runs around the island and dodges middle aged biking fools trying to make it up the next hill. While Northeast Harbor had a few folks roaming around the village, Bar Harbor was PACKED with humans of all shapes and sizes and a few dogs trying to avoid getting stepped on in the process. We checked out Main Street as best we could considering the competition for sidewalk space and walked down to the waterfront to Oli's Trolley where we saddled up and headed up Cadillac Mountain with our good friend and driver, Ron - who was actually born and grew up in Bar Harbor! By the time we got to the peak, the fog was back so the only picture we got was of Oli's Trolley! But it was fun, I guess. What's Her Name commented that this was her 5th visit to the top of Cadillac Mountain - and she had yet to see the coast below! Looks like the record remains in tact.
Today is July 4th. Happy Independence Day! Between the fog and the fact that the Island Explorer has wiped out its schedule today due to the mobs in Bar Harbor attending the parade in the am and fireworks this evening, we are here in Northeast Harbor village for the day. Looks like we will miss the fireworks since they will be on the other side of the mountain. Actually - I could give a hoot since I am colorblind and hate the boom boom.
That is it for now. I plan to spend the day pondering what it means to be down east and the optimum length of a really good and satisfying shower. Here they charge 2 bucks for 4 minutes. Rockland was a bargain at $1.75 for 6 minutes. And at Chick's - it was FREE!! Plus, they give directions on the wall to run the hot water in the sink first so you don't get 4 minutes of cold water! You have to love these Maine Yankees!
All for now, Bye - off on a walk with a stop first to visit Toby, the black lab, who lives on board Old Salt, down the way, who is currently tied to a cleat on the dock!
