THE DOG BLOG - Watson's Wisdom

Dateline: Northeast Harbor Day 8

Hi again. A nice relaxing day - I LIKE IT! This am we woke up with the birds to fog, fog, fog. Could not see the end of the dock. No. Wait. We are at the end of the dock! You get the idea. Happy Independence Day. You would never know it here in Northeast Harbor. The yuppy stores are all open pushing $400 sweaters and such. Not a tee shirt in this town! We have Lily Pulitzer here! We walked all over town this am (not very hard for these little legs) and found some almond croissants to die for - but waiting until tomorrow am to get me some fresh!

Since the fog was pretty heavy still out in the channel, we opted to stay here in Northeast Harbor for the day. The Island Express isn't expressing much today due to the Bar Harbor festivities and crowds: so we took the dinghy down from the roof of After You, donned our waterproof pants, and headed across the harbor to the dinghy dock for the Asticou Terraces and Landing and the Thuya Lodge and Gardens - which is open to the public. They are perched high on a hill above the harbor, and you climb up a trail of switchbacks to get there. Nice that they had their own landing dock for folks like us! We dragged ourselves up the trail along hemlocks, ancient pines and pink granite, huffing and puffing - but doing pretty well for the AARP set.

Some old guy who was a landscape architect in Boston had this as his summer place and nicely left it to the people of Mount Desert - likely to the dismay of his near-do-well relatives. What a honey of a rustic lodge with BEAUTIFUL gardens and lawns. I could have rolled in that grass FOREVER - especially once the sun came out. The ladies ooo'd and ahhhed about the flowers. The guys found a bench in the shade. I rolled in the aforesaid grass.

Then back down the trail we went to get the inflatable and head off across the harbor, heads held high and heinies wet!

After the guys dragged the dinghy back UP ontop of After You, the boys zzz'ed out (including me) while the ladies headed off to take in the Asticou Azalea Gardens - yet another plot of land close by gifted by the old guy. I hear it was a pretty spectacular and tranquil setting. I had my own tranquil setting here on the floor of the cockpit - alternating between sun and shade. I heard murmuring that there may be some leftovers tonight - so I am ever hopeful. I also hear the rains arrive later tonight. Tomorrow we head across Somes Sound to Southwest Harbor. Adios for now!
